Understanding Drywood Termite Infestations

Drywood termites are a common culprit of property damage in South Florida, establishing colonies directly within the wood they infest. Detecting these silent invaders can be challenging, often leading to significant damage before they’re noticed. Safeguarding your property against these destructive pests is essential for long-term protection.

How Does Termite Fumigation Work?

During the termite fumigation process, our team will place a tent over a home before releasing the Vikane fumigant throughout the structure. The fumigant will circulate throughout the home to reach cracks and crevices between and inside wood where termites can tunnel and thrive. Termites will breathe in the fumigant, which then will deplete their oxygen, affect their nervous system, and cause their death.

After the target dosage has been reached and completed, assuring all areas infested have been rid of termites, we will remove the termite fumigation tent. Once the tarps are removed, the fumigant will disperse into the air. It typically takes at least six hours for the fumigant to thoroughly aerate from a house after treatment.

Beginning to end, from preparation to treatment to aeration, the entire fumigation process can take about 24 to 72 hours, depending on the structure and the outdoor conditions. For safety reasons, we will test each room in the house using a fumigant clearance device to ensure the fumigant has aerated and occupants can safely re-enter the home.

While it is important to follow our instructions to prepare or remove some items before the fumigation, termite fumigants do not leave permanent residues in a home or on household items.

What Needs to be Done for a Termite Fumigation?

All food to be consumed by people, and animals, as well as tobacco products and medicines (including items in refrigerators and freezers) will need to be removed from the home, glass jars and bottles or canned goods with the manufacturer’s air-tight seal intact can stay in the home they do not need to be removed. If any of these items are not sealed, they must be removed.

Bottled and canned items that have not been opened and still have the manufacturer’s airtight seal do not need to be removed. These items can include drinks, pantry items like soup, and medicines.

Dry goods packaged in bags and/or cardboard boxes and all condiments spices etc., need to be removed as well. These items include spaghetti, cereal, chips, rice, oil, sugar, salt, pepper etc.

Mattresses sealed in plastic, such as baby mattresses, need to be removed or the waterproof covers must be removed and or opened. These plastic covers can trap the gas inside. You also need to open or remove plastic covers on chairs, sofas and other items covered in plastic.

Remove all plants from inside the house and in any outdoor areas that will be covered by the fumigation tent to avoid harm and damage to our beloved plants.

All mulch and or rocks need to be raked back at least 18inches underneath the roof overhang down to the bare dirt to provide us with a great seal.

All shrubbery around the house like plants, bushes, hedges should be trimmed back to allow room for us to secure the fumigation tent between the house and the shrubbery.

The day before your fumigation, someone needs to turn off the gas line to your house, either you or the gas company preferred, we do not touch the gas shut off valves by any means.

The morning of the fumigation, it is recommended to water the perimeter of your house at a depth of about five inches. The moisture provides a great seal and helps protect plants that are outside the fumigation tent, and it helps prevent fumigant leakage at the base of the tent.

If there is a wood or metal fence connected to the structure you must remove at least two boards or panels that fall right under the roof overhang so we can tie our tents together.

What Are the Signs of a Termite Infestation?

There are several things that you should watch for if you think you might have a termite infestation. If you see one or more of these signs, you might want to consider calling a professional.

Is Termite Fumigation Effective?

Termite Fumigation in Miami-Dade and Broward County, FL is an effective treatment method, however, it’s not a prevention method. Fumigation controls drywood termite colonies that are active at the time of treatment but offers no protection against future colonies.

It is more difficult to prevent drywood termite infestations than subterranean termite infestations since there are more entry points for drywood termites. By sealing all cracks as possible and performing regular services on exposed wood, you and I together can help reduce the likelihood of a future infestation. Our prevention program that includes direct wood treatment and regular follow-ups provides the most affordable protection.

Be Careful of Tent Fumigation Subcontracting

  • Make sure whether the company itself will perform the work or if it will be outsourced.
  • It is very important to note that the great majority of South Florida companies, including numerous national entities, subcontract their tent fumigation task to whole sellers.
  • Primarily the subcontractor is the company responsible for the guarantee.
  • The underlying strategy is to secure the lowest bid for subcontracts and subsequently charge customers a higher rate, thereby generating profit.
  • Magnify your consumer experience by directly hiring the company that will perform the work, and which the actual owners are the one at your property hands on taking care of everything themselves. This is how we maintain quality control at every home.
